Florida shipping notes

Florida’s interstate grid from Jacksonville to Naples
Florida’s main carrier hubs sit on a short list of highways. Jacksonville holds the northeast corner, where I-95 arrives down the Atlantic coast and I-10 comes in from Tallahassee. I-75 crosses I-10 at Lake City, runs south past Tampa to Naples, then turns east across the Everglades as Alligator Alley to Weston in Broward County. I-4 links Tampa with Orlando, and Florida’s Turnpike climbs from the Palm Beach coast through Kissimmee to meet I-75 at Wildwood. Miami and Fort Lauderdale anchor the southern end of I-95.
Getting a Florida title and plate after delivery
Florida gives newcomers little slack. An out-of-state car must be registered within 10 days after its owner takes a job here, enrolls children in public school or establishes residency, and FLHSMV also counts voter registration, a homestead exemption filing or more than six straight months in the state. Buy coverage from an agent licensed in Florida before the visit, because proof of personal injury protection and property damage liability comes ahead of any plate. Seasonal visitors who keep their residence elsewhere can usually keep home-state plates; shipping a car to Florida for the winter covers that case and the 90-day insurance rule.
The VIN has to be seen in person by an officer, a licensed Florida dealer, a tax collector employee or a Florida notary on form HSMV 82042, so book that check for after the truck unloads. Bring the original out-of-state title, or ask your lender to transfer it to Florida if the car is financed. An owner with no Florida plate on record pays a $225 initial registration fee, and the Florida driver license is due within 30 days.
No tailpipe test anywhere in Florida
Florida shut down its emissions inspection program on July 1, 2000. It had covered only six urban counties: Duval, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade. A car leaving a smog-check state needs no Florida emissions paperwork, and the VIN check is the one inspection on the new-resident list.
Storm season, shoulder lanes and the snowbird swing
The Atlantic season officially opens June 1 and closes November 30. NOAA marks its peak around September 10 and notes a second bump in mid-October, mostly over the Gulf and Caribbean, just as the southbound snowbird wave starts. When FDOT activates emergency shoulder use, evacuees drive on the paved shoulders of I-75 north from Naples, I-95 north from Jupiter, I-4 east out of Tampa and parts of the Turnpike. Ahead of Hurricane Milton, an October storm, the state expected the Sunshine Skyway, Howard Frankland and Gandy bridges to close, and JAXPORT and Port Tampa Bay stopped waterside work.
Deliveries into Florida build from October through December. The flow reverses from March through May, when seasonal residents send cars north, and that spring wave ends before storm season returns. The snowbird booking calendar sets out when to book each leg.
Sending a car abroad from Port Everglades
Port Everglades, in Broward County near Fort Lauderdale’s airport, lists automobiles among its cargo and centers on Caribbean and Latin American trade. An export there clears U.S. Customs first: CBP wants the vehicle and its original title, or a certified copy, presented at least 72 hours before the ship departs, so plan the inland leg around that window.

Florida questions
How much does it cost to ship a car from Florida?
In October 2026, a sedan on an open carrier from Orlando runs $610–$1,745 to the eight destinations in the price table, depending on distance. Enclosed transport adds about 42% to the price model's estimate.
How many days do new Florida residents have to register a car shipped from another state?
Ten days. FLHSMV starts that count when you begin working in Florida, put a child in a public school or otherwise become a resident, so line up a Florida insurance policy before the car arrives and book the VIN check soon after the carrier hands over the keys.
Does a car moving to Florida need an emissions test?
No. Florida ended vehicle emissions testing in 2000, so a car arriving from a smog-check state needs no Florida emissions certificate. The inspection tied to a first Florida title is the VIN verification recorded on form HSMV 82042.
Who can verify the VIN on a car shipped to Florida?
A law enforcement officer, a military police officer, a licensed Florida dealer, a county tax collector employee, a Division of Motorist Services compliance examiner or a Florida notary public can do it on form HSMV 82042. Each one has to look at the vehicle itself, so the car must already be off the truck.
When is it busiest to ship a car out of Florida?
March through May is the busiest time to ship a car out of Florida, when snowbirds send their cars back north for the summer. In fall the flow runs the opposite way, with October through December bringing the heaviest demand for deliveries into the state.
How does hurricane season affect car shipping in Florida?
It can delay pickups and deliveries anywhere in the state between June 1 and November 30, with the greatest risk around the September 10 peak. A storm can close Florida seaports and Tampa Bay bridges, and evacuations turn interstate shoulders into extra lanes, so keep dates flexible when a system is forecast.
Can I export a car through a South Florida port?
Yes. Port Everglades in Broward County handles automobiles and focuses on Caribbean and Latin American trade. Customs must see the car and its title at least 72 hours before the ship leaves, so the truck bringing it in needs to reach the port at least three days before sailing.
