Truck rules in the five boroughs and on Long Island

A loaded car hauler is a truck under New York City rules, which cover anything with two axles and six tires or with three or more axles. NYC DOT splits its network into through routes, for trucks with no stop in a borough, and local routes for trucks delivering there. A driver may leave that network only at the intersection closest to the address and must return by the most direct path. Parkways are closed outright: the Belt, Cross Island, Jackie Robinson, Bronx River, Hutchinson River, FDR Drive, Henry Hudson north of 59th Street and Korean War Veterans Parkway all exclude commercial vehicles. NYSDOT notes that the ban covers every parkway in the state and warns that old stone bridges on them are posted as low as 6 feet 11 inches. That rules out the Southern State and Northern State, so a Nassau or Suffolk handoff gets planned around a road open to trucks.

Albany and Buffalo on the Thruway

The Thruway’s I-87 climbs from the city to Albany, where the I-90 mainline heads west through Syracuse and Buffalo to the Pennsylvania border, while the Berkshire Spur links I-87 with the Massachusetts Turnpike and I-190 connects Buffalo with Niagara Falls. Western New York has the tighter weather window: the National Weather Service office in Buffalo says lake-effect snow can begin as early as mid-November, peaks in December and largely shuts down once Lake Erie freezes in mid to late January. It supplies over half the area’s yearly snowfall in narrow bands that hit communities south of the city much harder than those to the north.

Plates, insurance and inspection after arriving

Becoming a resident starts a 30-day clock for registering the car, and the license exchange runs on the same 30 days. The DMV accepts only New York liability insurance on a New York registration. Someone still living elsewhere can register by mail; the required papers include form MV-82, original proof of ownership and proof of New York coverage. Allow six weeks for the registration documents and up to 90 days for the title; the packet carries a 10-day inspection extension sticker that goes on the windshield once the car enters the state. Inspections recur every 12 months, and most include an onboard diagnostics (OBDII) check of the emissions controls, which electric cars, models under two years old and those over 25 model years skip.

Snowbird timing from the city and Long Island

New York sends snowbirds south, and their cars follow. Southbound demand builds from October through December, then the return north runs from March to May. Moving a car against that current, north in autumn or south in spring, usually means more open trailer space.

Exporting through the Port of New York and New Jersey

For a move overseas, the Port Authority places its vehicle processing sites on the New Jersey side of the harbor, at the Port Newark/Elizabeth complex and the Port Jersey terminal in Jersey City, and they handle new and used cars moving in and out of the country.
