Texas interstates and Houston curb limits

I-35 runs north from San Antonio through Austin, Round Rock, Waco and Denton, branching into I-35E for Dallas and I-35W for Fort Worth. I-45 ties Dallas to Houston and ends in Galveston. I-10 alone covers almost 879 Texas miles, from El Paso through San Antonio and Houston to Orange at the Louisiana line, which leaves El Paso far from the eastern metros. Amarillo sits on I-40, and I-69E serves Harlingen and Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley.

Houston limits where a car hauler may stop. Anything longer than 22 feet or taller than 8 feet counts as a large vehicle there, and it may park on a residential street only while actively loading or unloading. From 2 AM to 6 AM, large and commercial vehicles may not park on any public street.

Titling a car at a Texas county tax office

A new resident gets 30 days after moving to register, and TxDMV warns that penalty fees may follow. Its checklist runs in a fixed order: insure the car to Texas minimums, get whatever inspection your new county requires, then apply in person at the county tax assessor-collector’s office with the out-of-state title or registration receipt, a completed Form 130-U, photo ID and proof of insurance. Keeping the out-of-state title rather than surrendering it means ticking the Registration Purposes Only box. Outside the emissions counties, the owner self-certifies the VIN on that form. Some county offices require an appointment.

Which Texas counties still test emissions

Since January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles skip the old safety inspection, and a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee is paid at registration in its place. Emissions testing continues in 17 counties: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery around Houston; Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall and Tarrant in Dallas-Fort Worth; Travis and Williamson around Austin; and El Paso. Bexar County, which includes San Antonio, enters the program on November 1, 2026. The test covers gasoline vehicles 2 to 24 years old, and electric vehicles, diesels and motorcycles are exempt.

Gulf hurricanes and Houston street flooding

The National Weather Service office for Houston/Galveston puts the peak threat to the Texas coast in August and September, though hurricanes have come ashore in every month of the June 1 to November 30 season. Rain alone can stall a pickup. The same office calls flash flooding most severe in urban areas like Houston, where water can fill streets, freeway underpasses and parking lots, and it notes that two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.

Winter Texans and the Gulf vehicle ports

Retirees known as Winter Texans spend the cold months in the Rio Grande Valley, and a 2014 survey by the Valley’s Business and Tourism Research Center traced the largest groups to Minnesota, Canada and Iowa. Northern cars heading into Texas tend to peak in October and November, with the northbound return building in March and April.

For an overseas move, the Port of Galveston’s Pier 39/40 roll-on/roll-off terminal lists passenger vehicles among its cargo, and Port Freeport’s Velasco Terminal serves roll-on/roll-off ships alongside container vessels.
