Southwest Detroit truck rules at the main loading hub

Detroit, the main loading point, tightened truck access in 2025. Southwest Detroit, the 18-square-mile district around the Ambassador Bridge that the Detroit and Rouge rivers and I-75, I-94 and I-96 border or cross, now closes all residential streets to trucks, along with stretches of Livernois, Dragoon, Clark, Scotten and West Grand Boulevard. Fort Street, Michigan Avenue, Dix and John Kronk remain approved truck routes, and parts of West Vernor and Springwells take local deliveries only. Anyone buying or selling a car in that district should plan the handover on one of those roads rather than at the front door.

Titling at a Michigan Secretary of State branch

Michigan gives newcomers no grace period. The Secretary of State expects a new resident to schedule a branch visit for a license, title and registration as soon as residency begins. For the car, the clerk wants the out-of-state title, proof of identity and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance, so the policy has to be in place first. Every owner named on the old title must attend, or the missing co-owner signs an appointment-of-agent form. When a lender holds the title, the branch accepts the old registration (expired less than 90 days) or proof of title and issues a “Foreign Ownership-Registration Only” registration instead of a Michigan title. No inspection appears on that checklist, and EPA does not list Michigan among states running vehicle emissions inspection programs.

Frost laws and the spring snowbird return

Snowbird shipping from Michigan to Florida, Arizona and Texas peaks in October and November, and the return north peaks in March and April. That spring leg overlaps frost-law season. Working from frost-depth readings, MDOT cuts legal weights on routes marked seasonal (solid or dashed red on its Truck Operators Map) by 25 percent on concrete and 35 percent on asphalt. All-season routes, drawn in green and gold, keep full axle weights. In 2026 the limits started February 17 in the southern Lower Peninsula, below a line from Ludington to Standish, and the last state limits came off May 15. County road commissions and city public works departments post their own limits, which usually but not always match MDOT’s, so a returning car in rural Michigan may need to meet the truck on an all-season road.

Lake-effect bands and Mackinac Bridge wind limits

Grand Rapids, the second hub, sits in reach of Lake Michigan snow. The National Weather Service office there says westerly winds put the heaviest bands between Grand Haven and South Haven and push them inland to Grand Rapids and Hastings, while northwest winds favor Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren and Kalamazoo counties, plus Ludington and Baldwin farther north. A winter pickup in those counties is easier with a flexible window.

For Upper Peninsula cars routed over the Mackinac Bridge, the bridge authority acts on sustained wind, not gusts. From 35 to 50 mph, trailers and other high-profile vehicles wait for an escort; from 50 to 65 mph they cannot cross; at 65 mph the bridge closes to all traffic.
