When to Book Snowbird Car Shipping for the 2026-27 Season

Book the southbound leg four to six weeks before an October or November pickup, and the spring return in January or February. Direction moves the price more than the date: the HaulFare price model adds about 15 percent to a lane running with the seasonal flow and takes about 7 percent off the same lane running the other way. In its October 2026 edition, New York to Florida runs about $1,070 to $1,335 for a running sedan on an open carrier in November, against $970 to $1,210 in September.

When you book, you give a first available date, which is the earliest day the car can leave. It is not a fixed pickup day. Standard service collects the car within a window after that date, so build the window into your travel plans rather than the other way around.

Why does direction change the price?

Snowbird lanes behave differently from the rest of the market because so many people travel the same way at the same time. The most detailed public month-by-month count of Florida’s winter residents that we have found comes from a University of Florida report published in October 1997, with estimates for 1996: about 268,500 temporary residents on an average October day, 658,800 in November and 971,200 in January, falling to 576,100 in April and 294,700 in May. The totals are three decades old, so read them as a shape rather than a forecast. The count more than doubled between October and November, and departures piled up in April and May.

Car haulers feel that rhythm as a wave of full trucks heading south in late fall and a wave heading north in spring. In the busy direction, carriers can choose among loads; in the quiet direction they are hunting for cars to fill the deck. That is why the model prices the same corridor differently depending on which way the car is going. It applies the southbound factor from October through December and the northbound factor from March through May, and treats lanes into Arizona and Texas the same way on the assumption that winter visitors there keep a similar calendar.

Two practical consequences follow. A September pickup heading south sits outside the busy window: New York to Florida runs about $970 to $1,210 in September against $1,095 to $1,360 in October in the model, about 11 percent less. In spring, the national seasonal rise stacks on top of the northbound factor, so May is the costliest month to come home: Florida to New York runs about $1,085 to $1,350 in March and $1,150 to $1,430 in May.

Month South, New York to Florida North, Florida to New York
September $970 to $1,210 $970 to $1,210
November $1,070 to $1,335 $870 to $1,080
January $915 to $1,135 $915 to $1,135
March $880 to $1,090 $1,085 to $1,350
May $925 to $1,155 $1,150 to $1,430

Dates that squeeze trucks

  • Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026. Holiday weeks can be harder to schedule, since many drivers plan home time around them.
  • November 30, 2026. NOAA’s official Atlantic hurricane season ends. NOAA’s hurricane FAQ puts 78 percent of tropical storm days and 96 percent of major hurricane days between August and October, but a late storm near Florida can still pause pickups or deliveries for a few days.
  • Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, both on a Friday this season. Expect the same holiday effect as Thanksgiving in the week around each one.

Planning the southbound leg

Four to six weeks is a planning rule rather than a carrier requirement. It covers a few days to compare quotes, a pickup window that commonly runs 1 to 5 days after your first available date, and 3 to 5 days on the road for New York to Florida in the HaulFare transit model, with slack if a holiday week or a storm moves a date. It also gives the broker room to post the load at a rate carriers accept, instead of chasing a truck at the last minute. If your flight south is fixed, plan for the car to leave about a week to ten days before you do, and name a neighbor or property manager who can receive it at the other end. Our guide to wintering in Florida with a car covers delivery to gated communities, plates and insurance once it arrives.

Booking with less than four weeks to go

A short lead time can still work. Give the widest first available window you can, because a car that can leave on any day of a week is easier to fit onto a truck already heading south than one that must leave on a set date, and offer to meet the truck near a highway if your street is hard to reach. Ask the licensed transport partner how far out carriers on your lane are booking before you buy a flight. An expedited pickup is the fallback: in the October 2026 edition of the model, New York to Florida in November runs about $1,070 to $1,335 on a standard window and about $1,340 to $1,670 expedited.

Planning the northbound leg

Spring works in reverse. Booking in January or February puts your car in the queue before the March rush, and an early release date is the single biggest saving available on the trip home. If you plan to leave the car in the south for the summer instead, check the insurance and storage points in the Florida guide before you go.

Booking both legs at once

You can ask the broker to reserve the fall and spring legs in one call. Each leg is priced and dispatched separately, so the spring figure stays an estimate until closer to the date, but the return trip is on the calendar early and nobody has to remember it in March. The snowbird route planner lays out both legs side by side for your ZIP codes.

Questions

How far ahead should I book a snowbird car shipment for fall 2026?

Four to six weeks before an October or November pickup is a sensible lead time, because southbound demand builds through both months. Give the broker a first available date rather than one fixed day, since standard service collects the car within a window of several days after that date.

Is it cheaper to ship a car south in the fall or north in the spring?

Does hurricane season affect shipping a car to Florida?

Can I lock in the spring price when I book the fall leg?
