City-to-city route

Houston, TX to Los Angeles, CA car shipping

In October 2026, an open-carrier sedan from Houston to Los Angeles typically costs $1,140 to $1,415 for the 1,617-mile trip, with 4 to 6 days on the road after loading. Nearly every truck stays on I-10 the whole way, passing San Antonio, El Paso and Phoenix, so winter snow seldom slows this lane the way it can on northern routes. Route notes

The corridor

Interstate 10 links Houston with downtown Los Angeles, so a driver can make the whole trip without changing highways. Trucks head west on the Katy Freeway, pass San Antonio, then cross the sparse ranch land around Ozona and Fort Stockton to El Paso. Beyond it the road runs past Las Cruces and Lordsburg, then Tucson and Phoenix. At Blythe each truck clears a California agricultural inspection station before crossing San Gorgonio Pass.

Loads usually come together along the Katy Freeway and Beltway 8, where auction yards add dealer and salvage cars to many trailers. San Antonio is a common second pickup, and El Paso or Phoenix may take one car off or put one on.

The westbound leg tends to be easier to schedule, though the model quotes it at the same price as the eastbound one. In recent years more households have moved from California to Texas than the reverse, so trucks often reach Houston full and want a paying car for the drive back west.

Timing and season

February is typically the cheapest month for a Houston car bound for Los Angeles, and July is typically the most expensive. Summer quotes climb with moves timed to the school year, apartment lease turnovers and graduates starting jobs in California. Neither city draws snowbirds, so autumn brings no seasonal rush in either direction.

Most weather risk sits at the Houston end. Gulf hurricane season runs from June through November, and a heavy thunderstorm can flood underpasses and low streets in a few hours, pushing a pickup back. Farther west, desert highs between Phoenix and Blythe can pass 110 degrees in July, and blowing dust near Lordsburg sometimes closes I-10 briefly. Snow rarely touches this route.

Pickup and delivery in Houston and Los Angeles

Houston has no zoning code, so a quiet block often sits near a big commercial lot. Townhome compounds in Rice Military, Midtown and EaDo share gated drives no hauler can enter, and West University Place, Bellaire and River Oaks have tight streets under heavy oaks. Deed-restricted subdivisions in Sugar Land, Pearland and Katy’s Cinco Ranch often bar large trucks. A retail lot on a freeway frontage road is the usual answer. The pickup window typically runs 1 to 5 days. Take the EZ TAG off the windshield, hand over every key and leave about a quarter tank.

The truck enters Los Angeles from the east, so addresses on the wide boulevards of West Covina or El Monte usually unload early. Westside drops tend to come last and meet the slowest traffic on the 10. Venice has walk streets with no car access, Belmont Shore in Long Beach has narrow blocks lined with parked cars, and downtown towers rarely allow a hauler at the curb, so drivers often meet owners at a large lot near a freeway exit.

What moves the price on this lane

In October 2026 an open-carrier sedan from Houston to Los Angeles typically costs $1,140 to $1,415. An SUV typically runs $1,370 to $1,700, a pickup $1,390 to $1,730, and an enclosed sedan $1,615 to $2,010. San Diego, 1,535 miles from Houston, typically prices at $1,105 to $1,380, and San Francisco, 1,938 miles out, at $1,230 to $1,530.

July moves quotes toward the top of each range. Tractors delivering in California must meet that state’s diesel emission rules, which narrows the pool of trucks, and California diesel usually costs more than Texas fuel. A flood-damaged or non-running car needs a winch, $150 extra in our model, and ranch country west of Brenham can add up to $175. HaulFare only publishes these Houston figures and passes each request to one licensed auto transport broker; before that broker’s carrier is sent to Houston, look up the carrier’s operating authority on FMCSA and ask for its cargo insurance certificate.

Lane facts

  • Houston cars leave on the Katy Freeway and stay on I-10 through San Antonio, Ozona, El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix, entering California at Blythe and crossing San Gorgonio Pass into the Inland Empire.
  • Westbound trailers often add a car in San Antonio or El Paso, then typically unload Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley cars before working west toward the coast.
  • Houston to Los Angeles quotes are typically lowest in February and highest in July, and because neither city is a snowbird market, the lane sees no fall surge.
  • San Diego cars usually leave I-10 at Casa Grande, Arizona, for I-8 through Yuma and El Centro, which makes Houston to San Diego a 1,535-mile run.
  • Many newer Houston townhome clusters share narrow gated driveways that a car hauler cannot enter, so owners typically meet the driver on a freeway frontage road lot.
