Route notes

The corridor

Many New York City cars board the trailer in New Jersey, near the Turnpike or I-287, because building a full load inside the five boroughs is slow. The truck then crosses Pennsylvania on I-78 or I-80. Southern California cars usually follow I-70 to St. Louis, I-44 to Oklahoma City and I-40 to Barstow, then drop through Cajon Pass on I-15. Sacramento and Bay Area cars stay on I-80 through Omaha, Cheyenne and Reno.

Upstate cars begin on the Thruway, following I-90 along Lake Erie to Cleveland before joining the westbound flow. Buffalo to Los Angeles is 2,588 miles, nearly 300 fewer than the run from Manhattan.

Westbound, the backhaul helps with timing more than price. Trucks that hauled California cars east want paying freight for the drive home, so a New York car often fills a return slot quickly; our model still prices both directions the same outside the snowbird months. Fall is the exception, when many New York carriers switch to short Florida snowbird runs instead.

Timing and season

For a westbound car, February is typically the cheapest month and July the most expensive. July stacks summer relocations, college moves and job transfers onto the same trailers, and the Mojave stretch of I-40 near Needles can top 110 degrees, which is hard on tires.

The February discount comes with weather risk. Snow on I-40 around Flagstaff, near 7,000 feet, can hold a truck for a day, and Bay Area cars cross Donner Summit at the very end of the trip, when chain controls can stop a loaded hauler short of delivery. Lake-effect bands off Lake Ontario can also delay Syracuse and Rochester pickups. September and early October usually bring dry western passes and fading summer demand.

Pickup and delivery in New York and California

Expect a driver within 1 to 5 days of your first available date. Westchester parkways are closed to commercial vehicles, so pickups there happen near exits on I-87, I-287 or I-95. Staten Island is the easiest borough for a 75-foot rig, with big lots near the West Shore Expressway. Start a long-garaged city car a few days early to catch a weak battery. Keep about a quarter tank, hand over every key and fob, and leave produce and plants out of the car for the California inspection stop.

San Francisco is the tightest drop on this lane. Steep grades and double-parked streets in Russian Hill and Noe Valley leave no room to unload, so drivers often meet owners in Emeryville or Oakland. In San Diego, Mission Valley lots near I-8 beat the narrow streets of Pacific Beach. Los Angeles cars are often handed off in Rancho Cucamonga or Fontana, close to where I-15 crosses I-10.

What moves the price on this lane

Quotes in October 2026 typically land at $1,500 to $1,865 for a sedan on an open trailer from New York City to Los Angeles. SUVs usually price at $1,800 to $2,240, full-size pickups at $1,825 to $2,275, and an enclosed sedan at $2,130 to $2,650. Buffalo to San Diego covers 2,576 miles at a typical $1,395 to $1,735.

Hudson River crossings bill trucks on the New York-bound side, so a driver who comes into Manhattan to load pays the multi-axle toll before your car is aboard, and a New Jersey meeting point can keep the quote lower. A car that needs a winch adds $150 in our model, and a North Country or Catskills pickup far from the Thruway can add up to $175. HaulFare is not the shipper here; it refers each westbound request to our licensed transport partner, who confirms the rate and the pickup point, whether in Manhattan, New Jersey or upstate. Ask that broker which carrier takes the load before you pay, and request the carrier’s cargo insurance certificate so you know its limits for the trip west.

Lane facts

  • Westbound trucks cross Pennsylvania on I-78 or I-80, then Los Angeles cars usually take I-70 to St. Louis, I-44 to Oklahoma City and I-40 to Barstow, while Sacramento and Bay Area cars stay on I-80 through Omaha, Cheyenne and Reno.
  • Loads for California come together at lots in northern New Jersey and along the Thruway in Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, and come apart in the Inland Empire, San Diego, Sacramento and the East Bay.
  • Westbound quotes typically bottom out in February and peak in July, and from October through December many New York carriers chase Florida snowbird loads on I-95, which can leave fewer trucks willing to run west.
  • California runs agricultural inspection stations where interstates enter the state, including Needles on I-40 and Truckee on I-80, so fruit, plants and firewood should stay out of a car bound for the West Coast.
