Student car shipping
Shipping a student’s car costs the same as any residential move: about $620–$775 for 500 miles or $895–$1,115 for 1,000 miles on an open carrier in October 2026 in our model. August sits in the summer peak of our seasonal index. Full-size car haulers rarely fit campus roads, so delivery is to a nearby lot or an off-campus address. Parents can book and pay. Timing around move-in
Late August to early September, the weeks before fall classes, is the busiest stretch for student moves. Requesting a quote three to four weeks ahead of an August pickup, or shipping the car a week after move-in once the student has a parking permit, avoids the tightest pickup windows.
What parents should know
The person receiving the car must be 18 or older and present to inspect and sign. Confirm the campus parking permit before the car arrives; some universities restrict first-year parking. A quarter tank of fuel, no personal items above the window line, and the student’s phone number on the order keep pickup and delivery simple; a printable condition report helps the student check the car at delivery.
Who signs the Bill of Lading
The Bill of Lading is the carrier’s receipt for the car, and federal rules for interstate carriers require it to name the consignor, who hands the car over, and the consignee, who receives it. They need not be the same person, and neither has to be the one who paid. A common setup for a first move: a parent requests the quote, pays, and releases the car at home, and the student signs for it near campus.
Whoever signs at either end should be an adult who can walk around the car with the driver and compare it with the pickup notes. At delivery that check matters most: write any new damage on the delivery copy before signing, because a clean signature makes a later claim much harder to support. If the student is under 18, or has a class or an exam when the driver calls, name another adult who can be there, such as a relative in town or a friend’s parent, and give the broker that person’s name and phone number before pickup. Send the student the pickup photos too, so they know what the car looked like when it left home.
Pricing and timing both legs of the school year
In our seasonal index August sits 7% above the baseline month, so a 1,000-mile open sedan move for fall move-in estimates at $960–$1,195. The trip home usually falls in May, 5% above the baseline, at $940–$1,170; bringing the car home over winter break instead, with January 4% below the baseline, estimates at $860–$1,070.
Our transit model puts 1,000 miles at 3–4 days on the road after a 1–5 day pickup window, so asking for pickup 9 days before the car is needed covers the slow end of both ranges; the dates are still targets, not promises. Before choosing one, check the school’s move-in day and parking rules: a car that arrives before the student has a permit, or before anyone is on campus to receive it, has nowhere to go. For the return trip, a pickup the week after exams from an off-campus address keeps the student from waiting on a driver’s call during finals. The price by month calculator compares every month for your route.

Enter ZIPs and vehicle details. You see a typical price range instantly, before you share contact information.
Request a quote
If you want a quote, your request goes to our licensed transport partner, an FMCSA-licensed auto transport broker. We send it to that one broker only, never to a list of companies.
Price, dates and carrier
Our licensed transport partner contacts you to confirm the actual price, pickup dates and vehicle details, then books the shipment and assigns an FMCSA-registered carrier. Ask about deposits and payment terms before you book.
Pickup and delivery
The assigned carrier usually calls 12–24 hours ahead. You both sign a Bill of Lading with a condition report at pickup, then check the car against it at delivery. Most shipments arrive in 2–10 days.

Student car shipping FAQ
Can a student car be delivered on campus?
Rarely. Full-size car haulers seldom fit campus roads. Delivery is usually to a nearby shopping center lot or an off-campus address.
Is it cheaper for a student to drive the car?
Often, for short trips. On longer trips the answer depends on fuel, hotels, meals, wear and whose time is spent driving; the shipping vs driving calculator compares both for your route.
Can I ship the car back in summer?
Yes. You can request both directions at once; each leg is priced separately for its own month, and summer is the national peak in our seasonal index, so compare months with the price by month calculator.
What documents does the student need?
A photo ID to sign the Bill of Lading. The registration should be in the car; carriers generally do not ask for the title on a domestic move.
