How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car 1,000 Miles in 2026?

In the October 2026 edition of the HaulFare price model, shipping a standard sedan 1,000 miles on an open carrier costs about $895 to $1,115, which works out to roughly $0.90 to $1.11 per mile, with the middle of the range near $1,005. Enclosed transport for the same trip runs about $1,270 to $1,580. Shorter trips cost more per mile and longer trips cost less, so the total for 500 miles is not half the 1,000 mile price, and 2,000 miles is not double it.

Cost by distance: 500 to 2,500 miles

The table below covers a mid-size sedan that runs and drives, picked up on a standard 1 to 5 day window, as the HaulFare price model estimates it. Enclosed figures apply the model’s 42 percent premium to the open range and are rounded to the nearest $5.

Distance Open carrier Open per mile Enclosed carrier
500 miles $620 to $775 $1.24 to $1.55 $880 to $1,100
1,000 miles $895 to $1,115 $0.90 to $1.11 $1,270 to $1,580
1,500 miles $1,095 to $1,360 $0.73 to $0.91 $1,555 to $1,940
2,000 miles $1,240 to $1,545 $0.62 to $0.77 $1,765 to $2,195
2,500 miles $1,370 to $1,700 $0.55 to $0.68 $1,945 to $2,420

For context, very short hops of about 250 miles run $1.64 to $2.04 per mile, and true coast to coast runs (Los Angeles to New York, about 2,885 road miles) settle at $0.52 to $0.65 per mile.

Why the per-mile rate drops with distance

Every shipment carries the same fixed work: the dispatcher finds the truck, the driver detours to your address, inspects the car, loads it, straps it, and repeats all of that at delivery. On a 500 mile lane that handling is a big slice of the price. On a 2,500 mile lane the same handling is spread across five times the distance, and the truck spends most of its time doing what it does most efficiently, which is driving a full trailer down an interstate.

Fuel is the other half of the picture. Diesel is the largest variable cost for a carrier, and the EIA weekly diesel price feeds directly into what carriers will accept for a lane. When diesel climbs, the long-distance per-mile floor climbs with it.

What moves a 1,000 mile quote up or down

Starting from the $895 to $1,115 sedan baseline, these are the adjustments that matter:

  • Vehicle size. A large SUV or pickup takes more trailer space and weight than a sedan, so it prices higher on the same lane.
  • Enclosed trailer. Add about 42 percent in the model. Worth it for collector cars, new luxury vehicles and anything you would not leave outside in a storm.
  • Non-running vehicle. The model adds a flat $150 for a truck with a winch and the extra loading time.
  • Season. In the model, June through August average about 12 percent above December through February, and July runs about 16 percent above February. On snowbird lanes, a shipment running with the seasonal flow (southbound October to December, northbound March to May) adds about 15 percent, while the same lane against the flow runs about 7 percent lower.
  • Pickup speed. The standard window is 1 to 5 days. Expedited pickup within 24 to 48 hours costs more because the broker has to pay a carrier to reroute; the model adds 25 percent.
  • Route density. A lane between two large metros has trucks passing daily. A rural endpoint means fewer trucks and a higher rate to attract one.

Open or enclosed for a 1,000 mile trip

For a daily driver, open transport at $895 to $1,115 is the sensible default. The car is exposed to weather and road dust for two or three days, the same as if you drove it, and any transit damage is claimed against the carrier’s cargo insurance, typically $100,000 to $250,000 per load on open trucks according to trucking insurance agents.

Enclosed transport at $1,270 to $1,580 makes sense when the car’s value or finish justifies the premium. Enclosed carriers usually run higher cargo limits, in the $250,000 to $1 million range that the same agents cite, and the vehicle arrives without road film.

How long 1,000 miles takes

Car haulers cover 400 to 500 miles per day, and the HaulFare transit model allows 3 to 4 days in transit for 1,000 miles once the car is loaded, since the truck also stops for other cars. Add the pickup window and the model’s timeline from first available date to delivery is 4 to 9 days. Expedited pickup shortens the front end but does not change the driving time.

Getting a number you can trust

A real quote is built from the pickup and delivery ZIP codes, the vehicle, whether it runs, and the trailer type. Anything priced well below the table above is not a discount; it is a load that will not move at that rate. Confirm the company holds active authority in the FMCSA SAFER and Licensing and Insurance systems, and ask whether any deposit is due before a specific carrier is assigned. A request sent from our quote form goes to one licensed auto transport broker, who confirms the real price from those ZIP codes and vehicle details.

HaulFare is a price guide and referral service, not a broker or motor carrier. Quote requests go to our licensed transport partner, an FMCSA-licensed auto transport broker, who arranges transport with FMCSA-registered carriers. Questions

Is it cheaper per mile to ship a car farther?

Yes. Loading, unloading and paperwork cost the same on a 500 mile trip as on a 2,500 mile trip, so those fixed costs are spread thinner as distance grows. In the HaulFare price model, a sedan runs about $1.24 to $1.55 per mile at 500 miles and about $0.55 to $0.68 per mile at 2,500 miles.
