The corridor
Southbound loads start in a few Puget Sound pockets. Carriers stage around the Kent Valley, Fife on the Tacoma tideflats and Everett, then roll down I-5 through Olympia. Many skip downtown Portland on I-205 over the Glenn Jackson Bridge. South of Ashland the road climbs Siskiyou Pass and drops past Mount Shasta and Redding.
In California the trailer starts to empty. Bay Area cars usually leave I-5 at Dunnigan for I-505 and I-80, and the rest cross the Grapevine into Los Angeles. Spokane and Tri-Cities cars often ride a separate truck south through eastern Oregon instead of crossing the Cascades.
Direction helps the shipper here. Plenty of West Coast carriers are based in California, and southbound is their trip home. A driver who just unloaded in Kent would rather leave full than empty, so a flexible shipper can often land a quote toward the low end.
Timing and season
February is typically the cheapest month to send a car south, and July is typically the most expensive, when summer relocations and new job starts fill trailers.
A small snowbird flow also runs this way. Some Washington retirees ship cars to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley in October and November, so desert deliveries can tighten in late fall, though far less than on East Coast snowbird lanes.
Winter adds weather risk. Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 can close for avalanche control. Siskiyou Pass often has chain controls from November into March, and tule fog can slow I-5 in the Central Valley on winter mornings. Fire season near the Oregon-California border usually runs into October, so a pickup before the fall rains should leave slack for a closure.
Pickup and delivery in Washington and California
The Eastside is where many Seattle-area pickups get complicated. Cul-de-sacs on the Sammamish Plateau and Redmond Ridge often sit behind HOA rules that bar commercial trucks, so drivers ask to meet at a big retail lot near I-405 or I-90. Service members leaving Joint Base Lewis-McChord usually meet the driver in Lakewood or DuPont, since a commercial hauler cannot easily get through the gate.
Expect a 1 to 5 day pickup window. Wash the car first, because months of rain and road grime can hide scratches during the inspection. Leave about a quarter tank, pull the Good To Go toll pass off the windshield, and have the keys ready.
In Los Angeles, apartment blocks in Koreatown and Santa Monica rarely have curb space for a 75-foot rig, so a lot in Burbank or Santa Clarita near I-5 is often easier. Orange County drivers avoid the 73, 241 and 261 toll roads. The receiver should note any new damage before signing.
What moves the price on this lane
In October 2026, an open-carrier sedan from Seattle to Los Angeles typically costs $965 to $1,200. SUVs typically run $1,155 to $1,440, pickups $1,175 to $1,460, and an enclosed sedan $1,370 to $1,700.
Stopping short of Southern California cuts the bill. Seattle to Sacramento typically runs $760 to $945, and Tacoma to San Francisco $785 to $975. San Diego and Palm Springs drops add miles and usually quote higher. A Siskiyou storm can pull trucks off the lane for days, firming quotes until the backlog clears.
An Olympic Peninsula or Okanogan pickup far from I-5 can add up to $175, and a car that will not start needs a winch, $150 more in our model. HaulFare neither arranges the move nor runs trucks; a Puget Sound request goes to a licensed auto transport broker, who books the southbound carrier and takes any payment. Ask that broker for the carrier’s cargo insurance certificate before the Seattle-area pickup, and read its limits and exclusions.
Lane facts
- Trucks run I-5 south from the Kent Valley and Fife through Olympia, often bypass downtown Portland on I-205, and cross Siskiyou Pass before the Central Valley and the Grapevine.
- Cars gather around Everett, the Kent Valley, Fife and Vancouver on the Washington side and unload in Sacramento, the East Bay, the Los Angeles basin and San Diego.
- Southbound rates are typically lowest in February and highest in July, and each fall a smaller wave of Washington retirees ships cars to the Coachella Valley for winter.
- Spokane cars usually head south through eastern or central Oregon on US-395 or US-97 instead of crossing to I-5, and Spokane to Sacramento typically runs $785-$975 for an open sedan.

Washington to California FAQ
What does it cost to ship a car from Washington to California?
For a Seattle to Los Angeles move in October 2026, an open-carrier sedan typically costs $965 to $1,200, an SUV $1,155 to $1,440 and a pickup $1,175 to $1,460. Enclosed transport for a sedan typically runs $1,370 to $1,700. Delivering to Sacramento instead lowers the range, with Seattle to Sacramento typically $760 to $945.
How long does it take to ship a car from Seattle to Los Angeles?
Transit usually takes 3 to 5 days after loading, because the 1,134 miles run almost entirely on I-5 with no long detours. Allow a 1 to 5 day pickup window before that. Bay Area and Sacramento drops come off the truck first, so they tend to arrive sooner.
What month is cheapest for shipping a car from Washington to California?
February is typically the cheapest month for southbound cars, and July is typically the priciest. The February rate comes with winter risk, since Siskiyou Pass chain controls and Central Valley fog can slow the run. Flexible shippers do best steering clear of the June to August moving season.
Can the carrier pick up my car at my house in the Seattle area?
It depends on the street. HOA rules on the Sammamish Plateau, steep city grades and tight cul-de-sacs keep many 75-foot haulers from reaching the door, so drivers often meet owners at a large lot near I-5 or I-405. Military families at Joint Base Lewis-McChord usually meet the truck outside the gate.
Do I need a smog check to register my Washington car in California?
Usually yes. California requires a smog certificate for most gasoline vehicles being registered from out of state, along with a VIN verification, and expects new residents to register within 20 days. Washington dropped emissions testing in 2020, so an older car that has not been tested in years may need work before it passes.
